LONDON FESTIVAL OF ARCHITECTURE

Brixton based design/architecture studios AWMA and Squire & Partners have collaborated to launch a free interactive installation which explores the South London neighbourhood’s unique experience of boundaries. Brixton Boundaries forms part of London Festival of Architecture 2019, the world’s biggest annual architecture festival.

Recognising that boundaries form part of our everyday experience, we set out to identify which helped people to feel secure and which form barriers to growth and inclusion.

Following a community workshop involving local people of various ages and backgrounds, we highlight the ways in which boundaries shape our community, and explore creative ways to break them down. The immersive installation reveals physical and emotional barriers through illuminations, mapping and film.

Visitors are invited to be part of the evolving display by adding their own experience to our map and graffiti wall. Throughout the week local neighbourhood and school groups will explore how boundaries define them individually and as part of the wider community.

The idea to be involved in London Festival of Architecture came about from our personal and professional shared experiences as design studios based in Brixton, establishing a boundary exchange where we could collaborate and create collectively.

It’s been a wonderful partnership for AWMA and Squire & Partners, an opportunity to draw together the local community and explore an open brief to identify specific local boundaries which shape our day to day lives.

We like how AWMA and Squire & Partners have taken the London Festival of Architecture theme of Boundaries one step further and really engaged their local community. We’re excited to see how the findings are shared creatively.
